Sunshine Hospital Redevelopment
Description:
More than $200 million has been committed for Western Health to expand and modernise Sunshine Hospital in a series of three stages. The State Government provided the bulk of the funding with contributions from the Commonwealth Government, University of Melbourne, Victoria University and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. Sunshine Hospital operates in the Brimbank, Wyndham and Melton catchments and is only 20 minutes from CBD of Melbourne just off the Western Ring Road.
An official sod-turning event on Thursday 29th January at Sunshine marked the commencement of building works for Western Health's $51.6 million state-of-the-art Teaching, Training and Research facility and $40.6 million radiotherapy factility which is the corner stone of the Stage Two Redevelopment at Sunshine.
Western Health is also partnering with the University of Melbourne and Victoria University to develop the new Teaching, Training and Research facility at Sunshine.
The University of Melbourne will establish a new clinical school at Sunshine to provide undergraduate and postgraduate training of doctors in the west. This will assist in addressing a national shortage of doctors, particularly in outer metropolitan regions. Victoria University will establish a centre for education and training of nurses and allied health professionals.
The State Government is contributing $28.6 million, the Federal Government is providing $7 million and Victoria University and the University of Melbourne are each contributing $8 milion to the new Teaching, Training and Research facility, with building works set to be completed in 2010.
